Byron Cemetery History
What You Need To Know:
- Contact a funeral home and discuss arrangements.
- Contact the cemetery to arrange the purchase of a grave or graves. You can choose the location of them or we can do that for you.
- There is a charge for the opening and closing of a grave whether it is a traditional casket burial or a cremation burial. This can be arranged by the funeral home or the cemetery, they will work together.
- After the burial, a headstone or marker is required. You can contact a monument company to place an order and they will contact us with the size and we will make a concrete foundation for it to rest on. There is a charge for this that varies on the size of the headstone or marker.

We offer a 12-month payment plan for graves and pre-planning.
ADULTS
1 Grave purchase (Any one grave in cemetery $850.00)
1 Traditional (casket) open & close (weekday $900.00) (sat. $1000.00) (sun. $1175.00)
1 Cremains in a vault or utility container (weekday $400.00) (sat $450.00) (sun $500.00)
(Any open & close may be prepaid but will be charged the Sunday rate)
BABYLAND (up to 1 year of age)
1 Grave purchase $400.00

1 Cremains in vault or container $400.00
1 GRAVE CAN BE USED FOR
1 casket and 1 cremains vault or container
2 cremains in separate vaults or containers.
2 cremains in one vault or container will be charged for two openings and closings,
(no exceptions).
HEADSTONES/MARKERS
● Headstone placement flush, must be on a foundation
●Headstone foundation cost 0.60 cents per square inch
● Headstone foundations must be 4 inches longer and 4 inches wider than the headstone.
● Headstone foundations can be prepaid. We will need headstone dimensions at least 30 days prior to setting headstone in place.
FOR A CREMAINS BURIAL
We need the transit permit before the cremains can be buried.
We also need the dimensions of the cremains vault or container.
If frost in the ground is too hard or too deep, the cremains open and close will need to wait until the ground has thawed.
Additional equipment cost may apply (ask for more examples).

Village of Byron cemetery rules
Amended May 18th, 2026
It is the desire of the Byron Village Council and Cemetery Committee to make Byron Cemetery a quiet, beautiful resting place for your departed loved ones. We believe that in enforcing rules, regulations and restrictions, it will provide to the greatest possible extent for the lot owners as well as to secure stability of improvements.
INTERMENTS AND REMOVALS
- Before a private cremains burial can be made, the fee for said grave and grave opening/closing must be paid in full at least 5 days before burial.A funeral home can pay the same day or deliver a check within 10 business days after interment.
- The Sexton or one of their assistance will be in attendance and have full charge of all interments within the cemetery. The Sexton or assistant cannot be held responsible for any mistake occurring from the want of precise instructions for the particular space in a lot where an interment is wanted.
- No lot owner shall be compensated for an interment in their lot, nor shall the removal of remains from a lot be permitted without the written consent of the cemetery sexton. No lot shall be used for any other purpose than a burial of human remains.
- No grave will be opened except for an official
- Interment of two bodies in a single grave is not permitted except in the case of mother and infant or two children. One grave may contain one body and one cremains or only two cremains.
- Except in emergency cases, funeral directors or responsible persons must give sufficient time before a burial can take place. We require at least 2 day’s notice to prepare.
LOT IMPROVEMENTS AND GENERAL CARE
- Improvements within the cemetery at any time will be performed by cemetery sexton, cemetery employees or assistant.
- No raised graves will be allowed
- No one but cemetery sexton or employees will be allowed to disturb the sod on lots or
- Flower beds, artificial flowers, wreaths, and urns must be placed just in back of marker space, but not to be over the length of marker and 24 inches All urns and flowers must be watered and weeded by owners or the sexton or assistants reserves the right to remove neglected plants from beds, graves, vases and urns as soon as they become objectionable to the sexton. Any unsightly vase may be removed by sexton without notice.
- No trees, shrubs, perennial plants or anything that continues to grow up and out, encroaching on nearby lots and requiring maintenance are allowed to be planted. All trimming of existing trees and shrubs will be done by cemetery sexton, employees or assistants.
- The setting for all stonework is subject to the control and supervision of the sexton and no stonework will be done in freezing weather or when the ground is not thoroughly settled.
- All foundations for headstones must be approved by the Byron cemetery sexton, we do make our own foundations.
- Veteran flags will be placed in veteran flag holders for Memorial Day weekend and can be removed anytime after Memorial Day at the Sextons descression. The Cemetery flag will be lowered to half mast at sunrise on Memorial Day and raised to full staff at noon.
MEMORIAL DAY AND FLAGS
Veteran Flags:
Flags will be placed in veterans holders for Memorial Day weekend. They may be removed anytime after the holiday at Sexton’s discretion.
Families may place a flag in the veterans flag holder at any time, if they become weathered, remove or replace them.
The cemetery flag will be flown at half-staff at sunrise and returned to full-staff at noon on Memorial Day.
GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Visitors are asked to refrain from all boisterous talking and laughing, and are not permitted to walk casually over or set upon the lawn except in designated
- Any person damaging or disturbing monument work, property, harming any animals or birds whatsoever without authority is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable to punishment by fine or imprisonment or both.
- Refreshments, alcohol, any form of marijuana or any form of an illegal drug are not permitted on cemetery property.
- No advertising signs of any kind permitted on cemetery
- Use of any firearm is not permitted in the cemetery except for use in a military funeral or memorial day observance ceremony.
- Speed limit in cemetery is 5 mph
- Cemetery gates may be open at daylight and closed at
- Vehicles left on cemetery property unattended for any length of time may be towed away at owner’s expense.
- The rules, regulations, prices of lots and schedule of service prices may be amended or changed at any meeting of the village council.
- Motorcycles, ATV’s, side by sides and snowmobiles are prohibited on cemetery
